Functional Medicine

What is functional medicine?
Functional medicine is a science-based patient centred healthcare approach which aims to understand the “how and why” of illness by looking at the root causes of symptoms as opposed to suppressing and managing symptoms. It is aimed at those with ongoing chronic and/or debilitating, (as opposed to acute), health conditions and by working together with clients, developing personalised programmes based on their specific needs and requirements, enabling them to restore health.
The functional medicine model looks at the cumulative negative effects of stress to the individual over their lifespan, (called the allostatic load), such as diet, environmental toxins and stress, and provides personalised programmes to help reduce biochemical imbalances. These imbalances, which may be for example, gastro-intestinal (gut), or sex hormone imbalances will impact on clients symptoms and imbalances.
Working with a functional medicine practitioner
A functional medicine practitioner works by analysing the following in each client:
- Health history from pre-conception to present
- Medical history
- Nutrition and lifestyle
- Genetic history
- Environment and social stressors
By developing an understanding of an individuals health journey and how they have arrived at their current health state, the practitioner can organise seemingly disparate issues into a complete story of an individuals health status and correct these imbalances to restore health.
How I can help you
As a fully qualified functional medical practitioner, I am trained to involve, educate and inspire you on your journey back to health by helping you to understand all the different factors which impact your health and wellbeing. Using this knowledge and background I can help you understand what may be contributing to your symptoms, and through agreed actionable steps through a personalised nutrition and lifestyle programme, together we can resolve ongoing, debilitating health challenges. Addressing the root cause means we are “looking at the roots of the tree, not just the fruit it bears”.
You are involved at every stage from initial completion of a detailed nutrition and lifestyle questionnaire prior to your initial consultation, to the development of an agreed health optimisation plan based on your specific health goals at your first 1hour consultation. Follow up consultations will allow us to review your progress to ensure you stay on track with your health goals and may also include any results from laboratory testing, (such as stool or blood tests).
