Functional Medicine Practitioner

What is Functional Medicine?

Functional Medicine is a science-based patient centred healthcare approach which aims to understand the “how and why” of illness by looking at the root causes of symptoms as opposed to suppressing and managing symptoms. It is aimed at those with ongoing chronic and/or debilitating (as opposed to acute) health conditions and by working together with clients developing personalised programmes based on their specific needs and requirements, enabling them to restore health.

The Functional Medicine model looks at the cumulative negative effects of stress to the individual over their lifespan (called the “allostatic load”) such as diet, environmental toxins and stress and provide personalised programmes to help redress biochemical imbalances. These imbalances which may be for example gastro-intestinal (gut) imbalances or sex hormone imbalances will impact individual clients’ symptoms and imbalances.

Working with a Functional Medicine Practitioner

A functional medicine practitioner works by analysing the following in each client:

Health history (from preconception to present)

Medical history
Nutrition and Lifestyle
Genetic history
Environment and Social Stressors

By developing an understanding of an individual’s health journey and how they have arrived at their current health state, the practitioner can organise seemingly disparate issues into a complete story of an individuals’ health status and correct these imbalances to restore health.

How I can help you using Functional Medicine

As a fully qualified functional medicine practitioner, I can help you resolve ongoing debilitating health challenges by working together with you to develop personalised nutrition and lifestyle programmes which address the root causes of your symptoms – “looking at the roots of the tree not just the fruits it bears”.

You will be involved at every stage from the initial completion of a detailed nutrition and lifestyle questionnaire prior to the initial consultation, to the development of an agreed health optimisation plan based on your specific health goals at your first 1 hour consultation. Follow up consultations allow for your progress to be reviewed to ensure you are moving forward to reach your health goals and may also include results from laboratory testing such as stool tests or blood tests to determine for example sex hormone status.

As Functional Medicine Practitioner, I am trained to involve, educate, and inspire clients on their journey back to health by helping them understand the impact of all the different factors which impact their health and wellbeing, what may be contributing to their symptoms and through agreed actionable steps modify what is preventing a client from optimal health.

Within 2 weeks I had come off my medication

Within 2 weeks after following Angela’s advice I had come off my medication and my symptoms had all but disappeared. At the second consultation Angela explained to me the downsides of the medication and we worked together on a plan to avoid flare ups. I am pleased to say that after 3 consultations in total I feel confident that I have the knowledge and advice to avoid flare ups.

Angela came to my rescue

I consulted Angela as I had recently been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes. Angela came to my rescue, her consultations were very professional, informative, encouraging and she listened intently to all I said. All in all her help was invaluable and I would not hesitate to recommend Angela for the high quality of her knowledge, advice and her enthusiasm.

Angela’s approach was sensitive and caring

Angela’s approach was sensitive and caring and the plan was intelligently and individually thought through. She made dietary and life style recommendations based on an alternative hypothesis of adrenal fatigue and the changes were easy to implement and actually very pleasant! She also followed my progress across the succession of the diagnostic blood tests.
